:spider: Spider-Man:

Spider-Man is a superhero who appears in Marvel Comics’ American comic books. He debuted in the Silver Age of Comic Books in the anthology comic book Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962), created by writer-editor Stan Lee and illustrator Steve Ditko.

Since then, he’s been in films, television series, computer games, and stage productions. After his parents, Richard and Mary Parker, died in a plane crash, Peter Parker was raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben in New York City as Spider-Man.

Lee & Ditko offered the character a variety of supporting characters, including Flash Thompson, J. Jonah Jameson, and Harry Osborn, as well as romantic interests Gwen Stacy, Mary Jane Watson, and the Black Cat, as well as villains like Doctor Octopus, the Green Goblin, and Venom.

In his origin narrative, a radioactive spider bite grants him spider-like abilities such as adhering to surfaces, superhuman strength and agility, and the ability to detect danger with his “spider-sense.” He also creates wrist-mounted “web-shooter” gadgets that shoot his artificial spider webs.

Teenagers in superhero comic books were traditionally restricted to the role of sidekick to the protagonist when Spider-Man first emerged in the early 1960s. Peter Parker, a high school student from Queens, New York, was introduced as Spider-secret Man’s identity in the Spider-Man series, and his “self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness” were concerns that young readers could connect to.

While Spider-Man had all the characteristics of a sidekick, unlike previous teen heroes such as Bucky and Robin, he lacked the superhero mentorship of Captain America and Batman, and thus had to learn for himself that “with great power comes great responsibility”—a line included in a text box in the final panel of the first Spider-Man story but later retroactively attributed to his guardian, his late Uncle Ben Parker.

:spider: Spider-Man, Homecoming:

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a 2017 American superhero film co-produced by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. It is the 16th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the second reboot of Spider-Man (MCU).

Jon Watts directed the picture, which was based on a script by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, and Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Michael Keaton, Jon Favreau, Gwyneth Paltrow, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Marisa Tomei, and Robert Downey Jr. star alongside Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man. Peter Parker tries to balance high school life with being Spider-Man while battling the Vulture in Spider-Man: Homecoming (Keaton).

In February 2015, Marvel Studios and Sony agreed to share Spider-film Man’s rights, bringing the character into the MCU for the first time. Holland was cast as the lead role the following June, and Watts was hired to helm.

The appointments of Daley and Goldstein came soon after. The film’s title and actors were unveiled in April 2016, with Downey reprising his MCU role of Tony Stark / Iron Man. Principal photography began in June 2016 in Fayette County, Georgia, and proceeded in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York City.

During filming, which wrapped in Berlin in October 2016, the other screenwriters were disclosed. The production crew took steps to separate the picture from previous Spider-Man films.

As part of Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: Homecoming premiered in Hollywood on June 28, 2017, and was released in the United States on July 7, 2017. Homecoming was the second-highest-earning Spider-Man picture and the sixth-highest-grossing film of 2017, grossing over $880 million worldwide.

The light tone and focus on Parker’s high school life, as well as the performances, particularly by Holland and Keaton, were praised. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2019) are the two sequels that have been released (2021). Spider-Man: Freshman Year, a prequel animated series, is in the works, as is a new trilogy of live-action features from Sony and Marvel Studios.

:spider: Summary:

Spider-Man: Homecoming is the 16th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Tom Holland stars as Peter Parker / Spider-Man. Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Tony Stark / Iron Man. The film was released on July 7, 2017.

:spider: The cast of Spider-Man, Homecoming:

:spider_web: 1-Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man:

Holland’s performances in The Impossible (2012), Wolf Hall (2015), and In the Heart of the Sea delighted producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal (2015). Holland drew inspiration from previous Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, but hoped to create something “new and exciting” with his portrayal of Parker, the first to focus on Parker as “dealing with everyday problems that 15-year-old deals with as well as trying to save the city.”

Holland spent a few days preparing for the role at The Bronx High School of Science in the Bronx, where other students were surprised he was cast as Spider-Man. Holland believed that this would translate well to the film since other characters are unaware that Parker is Spider-Man.

Holland required anywhere from 25 to 45 minutes to get into character, depending on whether he had to wear a stunt harness underneath the costume. Holland had originally signed up for six MCU films, three of which were Spider-Man films.

:spider_web: 2-Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes / Vulture:

He wears a suit with Chitauri technology-based artificial wings. Toomes is revealed to be Parker’s love interest Liz’s father. To go with Spider-Man as a “normal child who becomes a superhero,” director Jon Watts wanted him like be a “regular guy,” closer to John C. Reilly’s Nova Corpsman Rhomann Dey from Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) than other MCU villains like Thanos and Ultron.

This kept Toomes from catching the attention of the Avengers, and it gave Parker someone to fight while he was still learning how to use his powers. Toomes, according to Keaton, was not wholly evil “There are bits of him that you think to yourself, ‘You know what? I can see where he’s coming from.’” Eric Hauserman Carroll, a co-producer, compared Toomes to "Tony Stark is a “dark businessman with a family.” He wants to keep an eye on his children.

He doesn’t have these grandiose fantasies like taking over the globe, overthrowing the government, or even defeating the Avengers. He simply wants a chance at the nice life." After playing Batman in Tim Burton’s 1989 film and its 1992 sequel, Keaton was not hesitant to play another comic book role.

:spider_web: 3-Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan:

The former head of security for Stark Industries and Tony Stark’s driver and bodyguard. In the film, Hogan is “watching after” Parker, according to Favreau, who says Parker “needs someone to assist him out.”

Favreau previously played Hogan in the Iron Man films, as well as directing the first two, and said that returning as an actor was “fun,” as it allowed him to “maintain the relationship with the MCU. Especially when the filmmakers are taking care of you, and taking care of the characters and the story.”

:spider_web: 4-Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts:

Tony Stark’s fiancée and the CEO of Stark Industries.

:spider_web: 5-Zendaya as Michelle:

One of Parker’s classmates, also known as “MJ”. Zendaya, calling her awkward but intellectual, said that “she just feels like she doesn’t need to talk to people” because of her intelligence. She went on to say that Michelle’s odd and distinct personality was “refreshing,” and that “a lot of young people—especially young women—can identify to it.”

Watts compared the role to Allison Reynolds from The Breakfast Club (1985) and Lindsay Weir from Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000), played by Ally Sheedy and Linda Cardellini, respectively.

The character was given the initials “MJ” to “remind you of that dynamic,” with the authors “planting the seeds in this movie” for comparisons to Mary Jane Watson while still making her “wholly distinct.” Michelle is “not obsessed with” Parker, as Watson is in the comics, according to Feige, “she’s simply observant.” In the sequel Spider-Man: No Way Home, her entire name, Michelle Jones-Watson, was revealed (2021).

:spider_web: 6-Donald Glover as Aaron Davis:

A criminal looking to purchase weapons from Toomes. In the comics, Davis is the uncle of Miles Morales, the Spider-Man heir apparent. Glover played Morales in the Ultimate Spider-Man television series and lobbied for a film adaptation of Spider-Man in 2010.

Watts was aware of the campaign and questioned Feige about hiring Glover as soon as he was hired. Morales’ appearance in a future MCU film was intended to be a “surprise delight for fans,” with Davis mentioning his nephew to set up Morales’ appearance in a future MCU film.

Watts demanded that Glover take the part, informing him that if he didn’t, Davis would be cut from the movie.

:spider_web: 7-Jacob Batalon as Ned:

Parker’s best friend, who is a “complete gamer”. Parker’s “quintessential best guy, the best man, the number two guy, the guy in the chair,” according to Batalon. Marvel-based the character on Ned Leeds, who does not have a last name in the script or film, but who is essentially their character.

Ned and other characters in the film, according to Carroll, are composites of several of their favorite Spider-Man characters, most notably Ganke Lee, Miles Morales’ best buddy in Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man. In the sequel Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), he is given the surname “Leeds,” which was verified in No Way Home.

:spider_web: 8-Laura Harrier as Liz:

A senior, Parker’s love interest, and Toomes’ daughter, with a “type-A” personality.

:spider_web: 9-Tony Revolori as Flash:

Parker’s rival and classmate. The character is usually portrayed as a white bully in the comics, and the Guatemalan American actor got death threats after being cast. Because he is a popular character among fans, Revolori worked hard “to give him justice.”

Instead of being a physically intimidating j0ck, Flash Thompson was reimagined as “a rich, smug kid” to reflect contemporary views of bullying, by making him more of a social media bully and Parker’s rival than a j0ck; this portrayal was largely informed by Holland’s visit to The Bronx High School of Science.

According to Revolori, Flash will have to work hard to match Parker’s intelligence “One of the reasons he dislikes Peter is because of this. Everyone else seems to like Peter, so he wonders why they don’t like him as well.” For the part, Revolori gained 60 lb (27 kg).

:spider_web: 10-Bokeem Woodbine as Herman Schultz / Shocker:

An accomplice of Toomes’ who is the second person to use modified, Vibro-blast shooting versions of Brock Rumlow’s gauntlets.

:spider_web: 11-Tyne Daly as Anne Marie Hoag:

The head of the U.S. Department of Damage Control.

:spider_web: 12-Marisa Tomei as May Parker:

Peter’s aunt. Tomei’s casting sparked outrage on social media, with comic book fans claiming that she was “too young and gorgeous to portray the role,” especially because the character has previously been played by actresses far older than Tomei.

According to Captain America: Civil War (2016) co-writer Stephen McFeely, they tried to make Peter “as lifelike as possible” for the MCU, which is partly why his aunt isn’t 80 years old; if she’s the sister of his de@d mother, why does she have to be two generations ahead? In the casting process, Carroll explained that the creative team was searching for a “big sister” or someone younger than Peter Parker.

Tomei made “a case to age me up” after researching the role, but “no they didn’t do it.” To illustrate where Peter’s values came from, Tomei talked to Watts about May being “a community organizer or invested in the neighborhood,” which she felt was a “clean canvas” from which she could construct the character.

:spider_web: 13-Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark / Iron Man:

A self-described genius, billionaire, play-boy, and philanthropist who is Parker’s mentor and the architect of the United States Department of Damage Control. Beyond the monetary benefits of including Downey in the picture, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman remarked that the inclusion of Stark was vital owing to the relationship formed between him and Parker in Captain America: Civil War.

Watts pointed out that following Stark’s actions in Civil War, which introduced Parker to life as an Avenger, there are several implications “That has a lot of ramifications. Is this the first step toward Tony becoming a mentor figure? Is that something he’s okay with?” Stark has been compared to Ethan Hawke’s father character in Boyhood, according to co-writer Jonathan Goldstein (2014).

In addition, Kerry Condon and Chris Evans return as F.R.I.D.A.Y. and Steve Rogers / Captain America, respectively, from prior MCU films. In public service messages played at Parker’s school, Rogers appears.

Doris Toomes, Adrian’s wife, and Liz’s mother are played by Garcelle Beauvais, and Karen, the A.I. in Parker’s suit, is voiced by Jennifer Connelly. Mr. Delmar, the owner of a neighborhood bodega, is played by Hemky Madera, while Damage Control agent Foster is played by Gary Weeks. Jackson Brice, played by Logan Marshall-Green, is the first Shocker, a Toomes’ accomplice who uses modified Vibro-blast shooting versions of Brock Rumlow’s gauntlets.

Michael Chernus as Phineas Mason, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan, and Christopher Berry as Randy are some of Toomes’ other business associates.

Kenneth Choi, who previously played Jim Morita in the MCU, plays Principal Morita’s descendant; Hannibal Buress plays Coach Wilson, the school’s gym teacher, who he describes as “one of the bonehead characters who doesn’t realize [Parker is] Spider-Man”; Martin Starr, who reprises his previously unnamed role from The Incredible Hulk (2008), as Mr. Harrington, a teacher, and academic decathlon coach.

Selenis Leyva Sally is played by Isabella Amara, Jason Ionello is played by Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Seymour is played by J. J. Totah, Abraham is played by Abraham Attah, Tiffany Espensen is played by Tiffany Espensen, Betty Brant is played by Angourie Rice, Charles is played by Michael Barbieri, and Tiny is played by Ethan Dizon.

In the film, Martha Kelly plays a tour guide, Zach Cherry plays a street vendor who invites Spider-Man to “perform a flip,” and Kirk Thatcher appears as a “punk,” a reference to his character in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986). Stan Lee, the co-creator of Spider-Man, also appears as Gary, a New York City apartment dweller who sees Parker’s altercation with a neighbor.

:spider: Summary:

Zendaya described Michelle as “awkward but intellectual,” likening her to Lindsay Weir from Freaks and Geeks. Tyne Daly plays Anne Marie Hoag, head of Damage Control. Tomei played Parker’s aunt May in Captain America: Civil War. Screenwriter Stephen McFeely said they tried to make Peter “as lifelike as possible” for the MCU. Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman Tom Rothman cited Tony Downey Jr.'s role as vital.

:spider: Marketing of Spider-Man, Homecoming:

Watts, Holland, Batalon, Harrier, Revolori, and Zendaya attended the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con to premiere an exclusive clip from the film, which was also the subject of a panel at Comic-Con Experience 2016.

On December 8, 2016, the first trailer for Homecoming debuted on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and was uploaded online alongside a foreign version, which Feige believed was “interesting for people to watch both.” Vulture plummeting through a hotel atrium and Spider-Man swinging with Iron Man flying alongside him were shot specifically for the teaser.

The Vulture shot was made for Comic-Con and “was never meant to be in the movie,” according to Watts, but he was able to adapt the viewpoint for Vulture’s reveal in the movie. Because the marketing team needed an image of the two together, and previous shots “simply didn’t look that fantastic” at the time, the Spider-Man and Iron Man shot was made.

A background plate captured while filming the subway in Queens was used in the trailer shot. Within a week, the two trailers had received over 266 million views worldwide.

After screening the night before at CinemaCon 2017, a second trailer was released on March 28, 2017. The new Justice League trailer received more Twitter mentions in that week, according to Shawn Robbins, chief analyst at BoxOfficedotcom, but there was “clearer enthusiasm for Spider-Man.”

According to comScore’s PreAct service, which is “a tracking service utilizing social data to create the context of the ever-evolving role of digital communication on feature films,” the Homecoming trailer was second in new conversations (85,859) for the week of March 20–26, behind Justice League (201,267). During the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, an exclusive clip from the film was shown.

A third domestic and international trailer was published on May 24 by Sony and Marvel. Both trailers were well-received by /Film’s Ethan Anderton, who stated that Homecoming was the better of the two "This film has the potential to be the best Spider-Man film ever made. It just feels appropriate to have the Webslinger as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ".

“You may have reservations about a tech-heavy Spider-Man costume or other aspects of this portrayal of the character, but it’s still shaping out to be better than any Spider-Man presented in movies in recent memory,” TechCrunch’s Darrell Etherington agreed. The second trailer “probably displayed too much of the movie’s overall narrative,” according to Ana Dumaraog of ScreenRant, but the third “exactly exhibits the correct amount of new and old footage.”

She also admired Watts and the writers’ meticulous attention to detail, which was evident in the trailers. Birth. Movies’ Siddhant Adlakha Death, too, though the trailers gave away too much information, he appreciated them overall, particularly the “vlogging” concept. Dave Trombore of Collider echoed similar comments to Adlakha. Homecoming was the top film for new social media conversations in the week following the trailers’ debut, according to ComScore and its PreAct service.

Domestic and foreign release posters were released in conjunction with the release of the third trailer. The “floating head” style of the domestic poster has been criticized, since it depicts “a chaotic mass of people looking in different directions, with little sense of what the film would bring.”

Vanity Fair’s Katey Rich said the image was “too mired down by the many different threads of the Marvel world to spotlight anything that’s made Spider-Man: Homecoming appears distinctive so far,” while GameSpot’s Dan Auty dubbed it a “star-studded hot mess.” “The posters have been alright thus far,” Adlakha said, “but these undoubtedly tell average viewers to expect a highly bloated movie.”

The international poster, according to Adlakha, was more “comic-book-y” and “looks like it could be an actual scene from the film.” Rich and Adlakha also chastised the fact that Holland, Keaton, and Downey appeared on the domestic poster twice, in costume and out of costume. Sony and ESPN CreativeWorks collaborated to create cross-promotional television spots for Homecoming and the 2017 NBA Finals, both of which were filmed by Watts.

The commercials were created to “weave in a highlight from the game only moments” after it took place. In the trailers, Holland, Downey Jr., and Favreau reprise their characters from the film, with Stan Lee, DJ Khaled, Tim Duncan, Magic Johnson, and Cari Champion making cameo cameos.

A Homecoming-themed cafe debuted in Tokyo’s Roppongi Hills complex in June and July 2017, serving “arachnid-themed dishes and drinks, such as a Spider Curry, Spider-Sense Latte, and a sweet and refreshing Strawberry Spider Squash drink,” as well as a free, limited-edition sticker with each purchase.

New social media talks for the picture were second only behind Black Panther and its new trailer for the week ending June 11th, according to ComScore and its PreAct service; Homecoming was subsequently the number one film for the next two weeks.

Sony published a mobile app that let people “access” Parker’s phone and “see his images, videos, text messages, and listen to voicemails from his buddies” later that month. The app also included an “AR Suit Explorer” that allowed users to learn more about the Spider-Man suit’s technology as well as using photo filters, GIFs, and stickers featuring the character.

A game based on the film has also been announced by Sony and Dave & Buster, which will be available only at Dave & Buster’s locations. Spider-Man: Homecoming Prelude, a tie-in comic, was released on June 20 and collected two prelude issues.

A commercial hoax in which Spider-Man (stuntman Chris Silcox) descended from the ceiling in a coffee shop to scare customers was released on June 28 in partnership with Thinkmodo; the video also contained a cameo appearance from Lee.

Sony has worked with the mobile app Holo to allow users to overlay 3D holograms of Spider-Man to real-world images and videos, complete with Holland’s voice and lines from the film. Spider-Man: Homecoming—Virtual Reality Experience, produced by Sony Pictures VR and built by CreateVR, was published for free for PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive before the end of June.

It lets users experience what it’s like to be Spider-Man, with the ability to utilize his web-shooters to hit targets and battle the Vulture. It was also shown at the CineEurope trade show in Barcelona and select Cinemark theaters in the United States.

According to ComScore, for the week ending July 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming was the top film for new social media conversations for the third consecutive week, with a total of 2.67 million interactions.

Pizza Hut, General Mills, Synchrony Bank, Movieticketsdotcom, Goodwill, Baskin Robbins, Dunkin’ Donuts, Danone Waters, Panasonic Batteries, M&M’s, Mondelez, Asus, Bimb0, Jetstar, KEF, Kellogg’s, Lieferheld, PepsiCo, Plus, Roady, Snickers, Sony Mobile, Oppo, Optus, and Doritos were among the other brands featured Watts also directed a commercial for Dell’s marketing campaign, which had 2.8 million online views.

The winner of a build-your-own Spider-Man outfit contest held by Goodwill was invited to the film’s premiere. Overall, the campaign earned more than $140 million in media value, outperforming all previous Spider-Man films and Marvel Studios’ first release of 2017, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

This does not include the film’s merchandise, which is handled by Marvel and Disney. In China, Momo, iQiyi, Tencent QQ, Baidu, Mizone, CapitaLand, Xiaomi, HTC, and corporate parent Sony collaborated on the film’s marketing. Holland “produced a high school entrance exam greeting” to help target the teen demographic, while The Rap of China contestant PG One recorded a theme song.

:spider: Summary:

The trailers for “Spider-Man: Homecoming” was well-received. The first trailer debuted in December 2016. A second trailer was released on March 28, 2017. A third and final trailer was published on May 24 by Sony and Marvel. The film’s marketing earned more than $140 million in media value, outperforming all previous Spider-Man films and Marvel Studios’ first release of 2017.
