Talisa was born in Apia, Samoa. She had to drop out of school in grade 10 because she had to work and provide for her family.
Talisa immigrated to New Zealand from Samoa when she was 20 years old with a husband and two kids, Talisua Fuavai-Fatu, where they lived in a house for two years. It took one year for them to get off the benefit and support themselves by working as a cleaner.
Talisa decided to become a naturalized New Zealander in 2000 because she wanted to be able to vote and have more opportunities for her kids.

The oldest of 12 children, Talisua, is a determined and selfless person. He was born in American Samoa to two teenage parents who were not equipped to raise a child.
At age 11, he left Samoa to live with his father and three siblings in Hawaii, and then he moved back to Samoa with his mother at age 13.
There are many harrowing stories, but one that touched me the most was when Talisa and his friends got into trouble by walking out of school during lunch break.
He was put into juvenile detention with no other alternative by his mother. When he was released, he returned to live with his father.
He completed his high school education. He went on to college at UH Manoa. Upon graduation, he immediately started working for a financial planning company, where he worked for over 20 years and became a Vice President.
At age 38, he founded his own financial planning company serving hundreds of clients across America; by age 40, Talisua Fuavai-Fatu had grown so large that it began servicing people in Canada.
Although his family members continue to live in American Samoa, Talisa has tried to relocate them to Hawaii several times, but they have always chosen to stay.
He feels that there are many possibilities for employment and a great life in Hawaii and encourages others to take advantage of these opportunities.
