She believes that storytelling is one of humanity’s greatest gifts. And she hopes to continue exploring the story through film and television for many years.

Sophie is the seventh generation to play the jarana jarocha–a traditional Mexican string instrument with origins in the country’s indigenous culture.
Growing up in a Mexican family but not knowing my roots and where I came from, you know, it was an exciting experience, Sophie says.
As Sophie was growing up, her father often played music for his children at home. He’d sing and strum a ukulele or jarana jarocho–two instruments that he learned from his mother.
You know, when I was growing up, I would tell my dad that I didn’t want to learn an instrument; it just wasn’t something that interested me because I was very much into, you know, academics and sports.

For my mom, it was vital for me to play it because she lost her father when she was very young, and I guess she wanted me to learn how to play it because of that, says Sophie.
