The Hebrew bible is the bible of Judaism. A large part of Old Testament of the Christian bible is comprised of the Hebrew Bible which is also called Tanakh. It is called Tanakh because Tanakh is the acronym of the Greek names of its parts. It is the holy book of the Hebrew and Jews. It contains 24 books
These books are divided into three groups that are:
1.The laws: This includes the 5 books of Moses that are also called the Pentateuch (five scrolls).
2.The Prophets: The second part of the Hebrew bible is about the prophets that were sent to the ■■■■■■
3.The Writings: The third part of the Hebrew Bible is the writings which explain the poetry, wisdom, songs and jobs of the Jews.
So these 24 books of the Hebrew bible are included in the old testament of Christian Bible. The books of Old Testament, their names and numbers are different in different Christian denominations.
• The Catholic Bible has 46 books.
• The ■■■■■■■■■■ Bible has 39 books.
• The eastern Orthodox Bible has 49 books.
In its old testament.
Some of the books that are not present in the Hebrew Bible but are present in the Christian Bible are called deuterocanonical
Although, both the Protestants and the Catholics belong to the Christian community but there is a difference in their faith and beliefs. They both follow the same teachings of the bible but there is huge difference regarding the books of their Bible.
From the above lists of books it is clear that there are more books in the old testament of the Catholics bible as compared to the old testament of the ■■■■■■■■■■ bible. Now a there might a series of the questions arises in the mind of the one who is reading this article that why did some books of bible were accepted and some were rejected by the protestants? Or from where these differences came?
There are number of reasons that why these books were not accepted by the protestants?
The word Canon is derived from a Greek word Kanon which means ruler or standard by which some things is judged. It was a term that was used by the early Christians to judge the books of bible as being the word of God. This term was first applied by St. Athanasius.
For a book to be canonical there has to be two important points:
1.The first was that the book should have a jurisdiction of self-exoneration, means that the book should be clear and free of blame.
2.The second point was the author of a book must be a Man of God. This man of God was a Prophet in case of Old Testament and an Apostle in case of New Testament.
How the books of Old Testament of the Bible were chosen as canonical?
The books of the Old Testament were accepted as canonical only if they fulfil the two requirements that are:
- The first one was that the book should have resemblance with the Torah or the Pentateuch of the Hebrew bible.
- The second one was these books should have seraphic or Godly officialdom. This means that these books should be inspired by God.
From this it should be clear that why one of the books of the Bible was doubted to be non canonical in the start? Because this book was thought not to be inspired by God. However it was later accepted as canonical because of the deep providence of God in this book.
So that’s how the books of the Old Testament were considered canonical, however the books of New Testament were made the part of it after 4 centuries when Jesus wrote them.
The word Apocrypha means hidden. These books are sometimes called the deuterocanonical books. These deuterocanonical books are 14 in numbers which are placed in a separate section by the Protestants and 7 of these books are included in the old testament of Bible by the Catholics.
During the reformation period of Protestants in 16th century, Martin Luther expressed his views of being against the apocrypha. The Roman Catholic Church, in reaction of this, convoked a council in Trent in 1547 and they declared that the Apocrypha are canonical and they included these in the Bible. That’s why the Catholics and Protestants disagree over this issue. The Catholics consider these as inspired books while the Protestants thinks that these books are necessary but are not canonical.
In the history it is hard to find that how these books did came the part of the old testament of Bible. But it is said at many books that these extra books came the part of Old Testament when it was translated to Greek language in 250 BC in Egypt. This new translation of Old Testament was named as Septuagint. So it is said that these extra books became the part of the Bible only in the Septuagint while the Hebrew version of the Old Testament didn’t contained it.
Now for acceptance of these books by Catholics and its rejection by Protestants there are number of reasons:
They believe that the Apocryphal books are canonical because the new testament recites from the Septuagint. Therefore these books should also be in the old testament of the Christian bible
They accepted these books because some of the early church fathers had accepted these as canonical.
The response of the council of Trent in 1547 to the protestants had also given them a reason of canonicity of these books by accepting these books.
They believe that Augustine had believed in the inspiration of these books.
Augustine led two councils named as the hippo council and the council of Carthage, so these councils had also accepted the Apocryphal books.
Reasons why did the protestants rejected the Apocrypha
1 There are certain Doctrines and implementations that are present in the Apocryphal books but in the Holy Bible.
2.There is no citation for the Apocryphal books in the new testament as it has the citation for the other books in old testament because the writings of new testament is related with that of old testament. So non of the writer of new testament has ever made any reference for these books.
3.These books were never the part of the Hebrew scripture and they were always denied by the Jews. There is no evidence that these books were a part of Greek Septuagint.
4 These books were kept in the distinctions by the Catholics as well before the reformation.
5.None of the Churches in the early four centuries of the Christian history had taken it into account. However some of the Fathers had accepted but they were strongly opposed by the others.
6.Some of the books of Apocrypha are immoral like in one of its books Judith.
7.It is true that Augustine had accepted these books but his list is followed by the Catholics properly. He didn’t included the Baruch in his list but is present in the Catholic Bible. Similarly the book named Esdras 1 was present in his list, but is absent in the Catholic bible.

However the existing Bible has not the constant numbers of the books in it. The Bible has 2 major groups the Old testament which is mainly based on the Hebrew Bible, and the new testament which is only for the Christians. The old testament has different numbers of the books depending upon the Christian denominations while the new testament is the same in almost all the Bibles. The main reason for the difference in numbers of the books is the deuterocanonical books that are included in the old testament of Roman catholic bible, however these books are not taken as necessary in the ■■■■■■■■■■ bible.
The ■■■■■■■■■■ Bible contains 66 books while the Roman Catholic Bible contains 73 books and Eastern Orthodox Bible contains 78 books.
The 7 books left out of the Bible includes the following
- 1 and 2 Maccabees
- Wisdom &

Before reading the Bible you should pray .
• For wisdom.
• For Strength
• For God to speak to you…
• For good decision-making and for knowledge.
• How to respond to God’s word ask God to show you.
• Ask God’s words to be reminded whole day.
• For comfort.
It can be concluded that the original version of bible has been changed by many people because of their own views, thoughts and cultural backgrounds. However, there is not a huge difference in the numbers of the books in the Bible ,the only difference is brought by the Protestants and the Catholics. The Eastern Orthodox bible accepts all the books that are included in the roman catholic bible plus 3 more books.
