Original Stories of Mermaids
For a fresh perspective on the origins of mermaid legends from the past, author Monique Roffey suggests re-reading old tales about mermaids.
I relished the launch of Disney Plus streaming in the UK, particularly at the notion of more people viewing one specific film, as I headed into another week of lockdown.
To this day, The Little Mermaid remains my favorite animated film. During the last three decades, the worldwide fascination with mermaids has skyrocketed, thanks in large part to the film’s success.
Ariel, the titian-haired mermaid; Ursula, the octopus sea witch; and Prince Eric, the king of the ocean, are all now available to a wider audience thanks to Disney Plus’s 50 million users globally.
The Little Mermaid, Disney’s 1989 release, brought in $233 million worldwide . It’s no surprise that a live-action adaptation featuring singer and actress Halle Bailey has been ordered and was scheduled to begin production in April 2020. Due to the current worldwide epidemic and lockdown, filming on the new film has been put on hold.
Last year, the announcement of Bailey’s casting sparked a ruckus. Her race isn’t an issue for Bailey. Most of the criticism came from those who felt that the story was being misinterpreted or that it was based on an incorrect source.

Sprites of water
The feminine principle has long been connected with water in general. To provide an example, the sea is referred to in French as “la mer.” They have feminine names since they are so common in nature. Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Irma, and Tropical Storm Karen are among the many storms making landfall. Boats are given feminine surnames. The Ganges, for instance, is referred to as “Mother Ganga” because of its feminine nature.
Nature, like water, is often referred to as “Mother Earth,” or “Gaia,” in Greek mythology.
As a result, mermaids were born out of the human tendency to see nature as feminine. The majority of the merfolk are female, however this is not universal.
More stories about black mermaids and black mermen exist than white mermaids. Atagaris, an Assyrian goddess, mistakenly murdered her mortal lover Hadad 3,000 years ago, making her the first known mermaid narrative. Angry, she plunged herself into a lake to drown herself, but the gods intervened and transformed her into an emerald mermaid.
Quick facts about The Little Mermaid
The story was first published in a collection of fairy tale booklets by Hans Christian Andersen. The Emperor’s New Clothes, which he adapted from The Little Mermaid, appeared in the same edition as the original.
According to him, "Far out on the ocean, water is as transparent and as blue as a beautiful cornflower’s petals. However, it’s also quite profound… “The sea people reside down there.”
Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, a 1913 unveiling in the Danish capital, is frequently considered one of the world’s most disappointing tourist sites. The sculpture is made of bronze and stone. It has had its head and one of its arms cut off by vandals.
Beings of myth and legend
The symbolism of mermaids is one of otherness. They’re a little bit of both. Neither of the above choices. Because of the way her genitalia is tucked up in her tail, they may also reflect the archetype of the virgin.
Men are drawn to mermaids because of their “sweet voice.” As a result, they are often kicked out of their society and condemned to an eternity at sea in folklore.
This is, without a doubt, the tale of the Taino mermaid Aycayia, the inspiration for my latest book, The Mermaid of Black Conch…
Humans who were once mermaids, a lady cursed because she was too beautiful, brilliant, and young to be human. Male or female competition, male or female rage is directed towards them and they are seen as the antithesis of virginal because of this. Sometimes, mermaids may be vicious, predatory heroines. As in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, they may be terrible animals who lure unsuspecting sailors to their demise.
The mermaids of nature
The dugong and the manatee, both of which are classified as “sirenians,” must be the real-life inspiration for the myth of the mermaid. It’s hard to believe these marine animals aren’t cows, but they are kind of adorable. When I saw a dugong up close, it seemed to be smiling. They are docile, grass-eating, warm-blooded animals with curvy hips and thighs. They feed and care for their young by nursing them.
On one of his trips, Christopher Columbus noted in his diary that the mermaids he encountered “are not as lovely as they are claimed to be, since their features possessed some male qualities.” It is possible he was writing about dugongs or manatees after he had been near the coast.
At this moment, the mermaid represents everything we are not. They have the freedom of the oceans, while we are confined to the confines of our homes. In this case, the curse is inverted since the mermaid is able to move freely while we are stuck to our couches.

The Moral Story of “The Little Mermaid”
“The Little Mermaid” is a Hans Christian Andersen story about a mermaid who, after her heart is broken when the prince marries another woman, dies, but because she refused to kill her beloved prince, instead becoming foam of the sea, she attains redemption and becomes a Daughter of the air, a spirit who performs good deeds to ascend to the kingdom of God.
This is the moral of the narrative as originally told, as opposed to the more typical “happily ever after” seen in other fairy tales.
Giving her voice is a metaphor for women giving up their freedom of expression in order to be accepted by a man or society in “The Little Mermaid,” where sacrifice, God, and acceptance are often mentioned.
Sumamry
As a result, a moral subtext is subtly conveyed about the consequences of choosing to show oneself as someone one is not.
