Gregorian calendar was a further improvement of the Julian calendar in brought the whole world under one time. It was based on the seasonal activities of sun and the phases of moon. By adoption of simple rules of days’ application this calendar provides a full year with error of less than half a minute.
Calendar have been important for harvesting and agriculture as well. Due to lesser communication among people earlier the Babylonians had different cities and different calendars. In their setting the seventh day was considered rest day barring people from doing certain activities. However the last week of every month stretched to 8 days instead making a month of either 29 or 30 days.
In Egyptian civilization the flooding of Nile was an important event of the year because that determined whether the crops will bet enough water for the whole year or not. Therefore their calendar also circulated around those months in which the Nile flooding would happen. For example ‘first month of flood’, ‘second month of flood’. The purpose of a calendar wasn’t just to divide time into days and months rather to get in synchronization with one complete revolution of earth around the sun. The Romans were the ones who just got close to it. Their lunar calendars had 29.5 days a month with 10 or 11 days lost in a year. However their nundinal cycles contained 8 days in a week for festival or market. Such nundinal cycles were 38 in a 10 months year of 30 or 31 days.
As the Roman Empire flourished it got inspired from the Greek calendar and made reforms. It was divided into 12 months lunar which with had 29 or 30 days. The Romans gave the 3rd, 5th, 7th and 10th month 31 days. Rest had 29 days while February had 28. However with priest later on controlling Rome would lengthen the calendar to increase their tenure in the office thus disturbing the alignment of the years. After certain other reforms the calendar now had 445 days till 46 BC.
The calendar we see today had to go through many reforms because it wasn’t catching up with the earthly cycle. Till 14th century the church noticed that Easter which was supposed to fall in spring somewhere in March wasn’t fitting in. The major restructuring started in 16th century which took the form of the calendar we have today after much of mathematical calculation to correct the errors in the Julian calendar.
Although Gregorian calendar has been widely used ever since. Still there are many countries who would follow different calendars. Different civilizations also have their own calendars like Hebrew, Buddhist, Islamic and Chinese are common examples of flowing their own time division.
