HowtoDiscuss.com is an Open & Modern Platform for Online Discussions

Please respect our discussion board just as you would a public park. We serve as a shared resource for the neighbourhood and a venue for continuing discourse about interests, skills, and expertise.

These are only recommendations to support our community’s human judgment and keep this a tidy, well-lit area for respectful public dialogue; they are not rigid regulations.

Improve the Discussion

By constantly seeking to enhance the conversation in some manner, however small, you can help us make this a terrific place for debate. If you’re unsure that your contribution contributes to the discussion, consider your options before posting, then try again later.

We care about the subjects covered here and want you to act as if you also care about them. Even if you disagree with part of what is being said, show respect for the subjects being discussed and the individuals who are engaging in them.

Finding those that are currently occurring is one method to enhance the conversation. You’ll have a higher chance of meeting people who share your interests if you take some time to peruse the issues here before posting a reply or beginning your own.

Be Agreeable, Even When You Disagree

You may wish to respond to something by disagreeing with it. That’s fine. But remember to criticize ideas, not people. Please avoid:

  • Name-calling
  • Ad hominem attacks
  • Responding to a post’s tone instead of its actual Content.

Instead, provide reasoned counter-arguments that improve the conversation.

Your Participation Counts

Every new entrant is influenced by the talks we have here. By choosing to participate in debates that make this forum a fascinating place to be and avoiding those that do not, you can help us shape the future of this community.

Discourse offers tools like bookmarks, likes, flags, replies, revisions, and more that jointly allow the community to judge the best (and worse) contributions. Utilize these tools to enhance both your own and everyone else’s experiences.

Leave our neighbourhood in better shape than we found it.

If You See a Problem, Flag It

Moderators are in charge of this forum and have unique authority. And you are, too. Moderators can become more than just janitors or police officers with your assistance.

Don’t react when you observe inappropriate behaviour. It uses all your energy, wastes everyone else’s time, and fosters poor conduct by acknowledging it. Flag it. Moderator intervention will be automatic or automatic if enough flags are raised.

Moderators reserve the right to delete any content and user accounts at any time for any reason to preserve our community. The site’s administrators and moderators are not responsible for any community content uploaded; they do not preview new entries.

Always Be Civil

Nothing sabotages a healthy conversation like rudeness:

  • Be civil. Don’t’ post anything that a reasonable person would consider offensive, abusive, or hate speech.
  • Keep it clean. Don’t’ post anything obscene or sexually explicit.
  • Respect each other. Don’t’ harass or grieve anyone, impersonate people, or expose their private information.
  • Respect our forum. Don’t’ post spam or otherwise vandalize the forum.

Avoid even the appearance of any of these things, as these are not specific terms with precise definitions. If you’re unsure, consider your reaction if the New York Times main page featured your post.

Because this is a public forum, search engines index the conversations here and use family- and friend-safe language, links, and images.

Keep It Tidy

Make an effort to put things in the right place so we can spend more time discussing and less cleaning up. So:

  • Don’t’ start a topic in the wrong category.
  • Don’t’ cross-post the same thing on multiple topics.
  • Don’t’ post no-content replies.
  • Don’t’ divert a topic by changing it midstream.
  • Don’t’ sign your posts — every post has your profile information attached to it.

Rather than posting “+1” or “Agreed,” use the Like button. Rather than taking an existing topic in a radically different direction, use Reply as a Linked Topic.

Post Only Your Own Stuff

Anything electronically that belongs to someone else cannot be posted without that person’s consent. Posting instructions for stealing someone’s intellectual property (software, video, music, or photos), breaching the law, or links to such information is prohibited.

Powered by You

This site is operated by your friendly local staff and you, the community. If you have further questions about how things should work here, open a new topic in the site feedback category and let’s discuss! If there’s a critical or urgent issue that a meta topic or flag can’t handle, contact us via the staff page.
