  1. Older type of iron with about 1 to 3 percent by weight of slag which gives it a characteristic grain. It is highly rust resistant, welts easily, and is more suitable for forging or rolling than casting.

  2. A tough malleable form of iron suitable for forging or rolling rather than casting, obtained by puddling pig iron while molten. It is nearly pure but contains some slag in the form of filaments.
