Stanford University, conventionally Leland Stanford Junior University, is a research university located in Stanford, California. The campus covers 8,180 acres, among the hundreds in the United States, and enrols more than 17,000 plus students. Stanford is ranked among the world’s best universities for its academic publications.

### History

Stanford University was developed in 1885 by Jane Stanford and Leland, who were devoted to the memory of Leland Stanford Jr., their only child. The centre was opened in 1891 on the former Palo Alto farm in Stanford.

Jane and Leland Stanford have imitated their university after the major eastern universities, most notably Cornell University. Stanford was called the “Western Cornell” in 1891 because most of its units were members of Cornell (professors, alumni, or both), including its first president, David Starr Jordan, and second president, John Casper Branner. Both Cornell and Stanford were among the first to have higher education accessible, unselfish, and open to women and men. Cornell is known as one of the first American universities to embrace this decisive departure from traditional education, and Stanford was also the first recipient.

### Management and organization

Stanford is a private, non-profit university run as a business trust run by a 38-member independent board of trustees. The Trustees serve five-year terms (not more than two consecutive terms) and meet five times a year. The current trustees elect a new manager by ballot. Stanford trustees also look at Stanford Research Park, Stanford Shopping Center, Cantor Center for Visual Arts, Stanford University Medical Center, and several related medical centres (including Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital).

The board designates a president to serve as the university’s chief executive officer, overseeing academic and academic affairs, oversee financial and business affairs, and appoint nine vice-presidents. The 11th and current President of Stanford University is Marc Trevor Tessier-Lavigne, a Canadian neuroscientist. The principal is the chief education and budget officer for each of the seven schools. Persis Drell became the 13th chief executive in February 2017.
