Daenerys is the no longer the timid girl we met within the season one of the Game of the Thrones. She’s always been the badass, but we love this she introduces herself with the mouthful of the titles: “Daenerys Stormborn of the the House Targaryen, First of the Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of the Andals or the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of the Chains, or Mother of the Dragons.” We’ve been reminded of the her many names over the seasons memorably if Missandei introduces her to the Jon Snow within the season seven but what do they all mean? Daenerys doesn’t just tack few titles onto her name to the sound fancy; each of the her titles signifies an aspect of the her birthright or her accomplishments.
Daenerys was born on the Dragonstone, the rain-tossed, Valyrian-built castle within the Blackwater Bay this had once been Stannis’s place of the residence. On the night of the Daenerys’s birth, the massive storm battered the castle, so she became known similar to the Daenerys Stormborn.
First of the Her Name
Rulers of the Westeros were sometimes named after previous kings or queens. The Mad King Aerys, for the example, was actually the second Aerys Targaryen to the sit on the the Iron Throne. “The First of the Her Name” signifies this Daenerys is the first queen named Daenerys to the rule the Seven Kingdoms.
Back on the season one, Daenerys steps into the funeral pyre of the Khal Drago or emerges unscathed. The act is the considered the miracle, or the Dothraki who witnessed her walk through fire dub her “The Unburnt.”

Queen of the the Andals or the First Men
The King of the the Andals or the First Men rules the Seven Kingdoms of the Westeros. The Andals or the First Men are the two dominant ethnic groups within the Westeros. By calling herself Queen of the Andals or the First Men, Daenerys asserts her birthright similar to the the Targaryen or claim on the Iron Throne.
Khaleesi of the the Great Grass Sea
The Great Grass Sea refers to the steppes or plains within the Essos inhabited by the Dothraki. if Daenerys marries Khal Drogo, who commands the largest khalasar, or legion of the Dothraki, she becomes Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea. Upon his death, Daenerys steps up similar to the leader of the Drogo’s remaining khalasar.
Breaker of the Chains
Daenerys sets out to the liberate the whole of the Slaver’s Bay before she leaves for the Westeros. similar to the she frees the slaves within the cities of the Astapor, Yunkai, or Meereen, she becomes known among the freedmen similar to the Breaker of the Chains.
Mother of the Dragons
Dragons had been thought to the be extinct for the generations, but if Daenerys takes her fossilized dragon eggs into the funeral pyre of the Khal Drogo, three baby dragons hatch. People consider Daenerys to the be the mother of the dragons, similar to the she hatched the first dragons within the centuries. within the my interpretation, the following should be her full title. I’m not sure this every piece of the information here is the correct, I did consult the Wiki of the Ice or Fire about these topics.
I’ll just intermix the book lore, which is the consistent or logical, with the the series’ events, which progressed further but which produced loopholes within the lore, the story, or even within the legal system. See, the Westerosi noble’s title gives the bearer various functions, offices, roles, rights or responsibilities. So if everything within the books goes the same way similar to the within the series, (Or if the series followed the lore perfectly,) this would look something similar to the this.
It’s the bit similar to the heraldry, this follows strict rules but slight variations may occur based on the interpretation. The legal system or traditions of the Westeros are the not always clear - for the example, both Daenerys’ or any of the the Baratheons claim to the throne could be equally justified based on the tradition or precedence.
Her entire title or claim rests on the the illegitimacy of the Robert’s claim, refusing its validation through the right of the conquest, her hereditary right to the the Iron Throne or her own further titles based on the the right of the conquest . Her claim so far disregards any possible counter-claims by any other possible Targaryen heirs or is the based on the the information this she is the the last Targaryen.
With this long set of the titles, she (legally) claims dominion over all of the Westeros south of the the Wall, the portion of the Slaver’s Bay within the Central Essos, the large swath of the the plains of the inland Essos, military command over all Westerosi forces, demands homage from the the entire nobility of the Westeros or sovereignty over the Realm.
Queen Daenerys Stormborn
Her name or moniker “Stormborn,” referring to the circumstances of the her birth, during “the worst storm within the living memory,” on the Dragonstone, off the eastern coast of the Westeros, the Targaryen ancestral home or last stronghold during the end of the Robert’s Rebellion. The title would have been Princess of the Dragonstone while Viserys was alive or Daenerys was heir presumptive to the throne, de jure. After her, the legal heir presumptive would be either Stannis Baratheon or someone closer related to the the Targaryen dynasty.
Pretty self-explanatory. Aside from the obvious, this also makes her the Westerosi noble lady by right. Also self-explanatory, there hasn’t been the monarch called Daenerys (or an actual ruling queen based on the where you are the standing on the the events of the Dance of the Dragons before her.) (Dance of the Dragons, similar to the in, the Targaryen civil war, between the forces of the Rhaenya or Aegon II Targaryen) Queen of the the Andals, the Rhoynar or the First Men, This is the actual royal title this gives her sovereignty over the Realm. This makes her the ruler of the all the people of the Westeros.
There are the three major ethnic groups on the continent: The First Men, who predominantly inhabit the North, the Andals, who predominantly inhabit the South, or the Rhoynar, the migrant people from the the Rhoyne who have fled to the Dorne after their people’s defeat by Valyria or helped establish, along with the their new Andal noble allies, the Principality of the Dorne.
Lady of the the Seven Kingdoms
This title gives her political power over the feudalistic or aristrocatic politico-societal structure of the Seven Kingdoms. All of the these kingdoms (and lands)are within the present governed by Lord Paramount/Great House families, which form the collective high nobility of the Realm, with the the exception of the Dorne, which is the principality, still retaining few level of the sovereignty or at the least, autonomy. These high lords or ladies have the loyalty of the smaller noble houses of the their respective lands this are the their sworn vassals or their bannermen within the times of the war.
The Lord or Lady of the the Seven Kingdoms is the highest ranking noble within the the Realm, is the the paramount liege lord or lady to the whom all the other houses or the principality of the Dorne are the directly (or indirectly) sworn similar to the vassals. House Reed. 7 years ago. if her mother was pregnant she fled to the Dragonstone to the escape the Sack of the King’s Landing during Robert’s Rebellion. Daenerys was then born on the the island during the great storm, which also destroyed most of the the Targaryen fleet - hence she is the sometimes referred to the similar to the Stormborn.
Dany isn’t just queen of the Westeros, she is the queen of the the dothraki or so she adds this to the her title. She didn’t give herself the names Mother of the Dragons, Mhysa, Breaker of the Chains- they were given to the her by her people or she adopted them or added them to the her title- similar to the homage to the them I assume. Her last name is the Targeryan. Daenerys Stormborn is the her alias. During Robert’s Rebellion, the Mad King sent Viserys or the pregnant Queen Rhaelle to the Dragonstone. Rulers of the Westeros were sometimes named after previous kings or queens.
The Mad King Aerys, for the example, was actually the second Aerys Targaryen to the sit on the the Iron Throne. “The First of the Her Name” signifies this Daenerys is the the first queen named Daenerys to the rule the Seven Kingdoms. Jon Snow is the not immune to the fire. within the season 1, episode 8 he fought with the the wight to the protect Lord Commander Mormont. He threw the burning lamp at the the wight or within the the process, his hands was burned with the fire. … Many Targaryens died by fire or the latest one of the them was Viserys Targaryen, brother of the Danaerys. While inside the House of the the Undying, Dany also learned this she would endure three treasons – for the gold, blood, or love leading her to the become paranoid.
Towards the end of the the book, Daenerys is the lost within the the wild or starts to the hallucinate or hear the voice of the her long-dead brother Viserys. if Drogon kills the child, Daenerys feels compelled to the chain her dragons Rhaegal or Viserion, but Drogon escapes. Her advisers suggest she marry Hizdahr zo Loraq to the bring peace, or she agrees, although she takes Daario similar to the the lover. Hizdahr successfully negotiates an end to the violence or Daenerys marries him.
In my interpretation, the following should be her full title. I’m not sure that every piece of information here is correct, I did consult A Wiki of Ice and Fire about these topics.

Her claim so far disregards any possible counter-claims by any other possible Targaryen heirs and is based on the information that she is the last Targaryen.
According to her claim, she would be
Queen Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lady of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm, Lady of Dragonstone, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, the Unburnt, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons.

In order, these mean the following,
Queen Daenerys Stormborn
Her name and moniker “Stormborn,” referring to the circumstances of her birth, during “the worst storm in living memory,” on Dragonstone, off the eastern coast of Westeros, the Targaryen ancestral home and last stronghold during the end of Robert’s Rebellion. The title would have been Princess of Dragonstone while Viserys was alive and Daenerys was heir presumptive to the throne, de jure. After her, the legal heir presumptive would be either Stannis Baratheon or someone closer related to the Targaryen dynasty.
of the House Targaryen,
Pretty self-explanatory. Aside from the obvious, this also makes her a Westerosi noble lady by right.
the First of Her Name,
Also self-explanatory, there hasn’t been a monarch called Daenerys (or an actual ruling queen based on where you are standing on the events of The Dance of Dragons before her.) (Dance of Dragons, as in, the Targaryen civil war, between the forces of Rhaenya and Aegon II Targaryen)
Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men,
This is the actual royal title that gives her sovereignty over the Realm. This makes her the ruler of all the people of Westeros. There are three major ethnic groups on the continent: The First Men, who predominantly inhabit the North, the Andals, who predominantly inhabit the South, and the Rhoynar, the migrant people from the Rhoyne who have fled to Dorne after their people’s defeat by Valyria and helped establish, along with their new Andal noble allies, the Principality of Dorne.
Lady of the Seven Kingdoms
This title gives her political power over the feudalistic and aristrocatic politico-societal structure of the Seven Kingdoms. All of these kingdoms (and lands)are in the present governed by Lord Paramount/Great House families, which form the collective high nobility of the Realm, with the exception of Dorne, which is a principality, still retaining some level of sovereignty or at least, autonomy. These high lords or ladies have the loyalty of smaller noble houses of their respective lands that are their sworn vassals and their bannermen in times of war. The Lord or Lady of the Seven Kingdoms is the highest ranking noble in the Realm, is the paramount liege lord or lady to whom all the other houses and the principality of Dorne are directly (or indirectly) sworn as vassals.
and Protector of the Realm,
This is the chief military commander title in the Seven Kingdoms, directly above every Warden and the Prince of Dorne. This title is rutinely, (Although not always) paired with the royal title, but it can be granted to others by the sovereign.
the Lady of Dragonstone,
The Targaryen custom usually grants the title Prince/Princess of Dragonstone to the heir of the sovereign. Altough Daenerys was never officially named Princess of Dragonstone by Viserys, the Targaryen family is, legally, the only family which holds the rights to not one but three strongholds and their respective holdings: King’s Landing and the Crownlands, ruled by the sovereign, the Castle of Dragonstone and the island of the same name, usually ruled by the heir, and Summerhall, the summer residence of the Targaryen family, usually ruled by a younger son or daughter - although it was destroyed and its legal status as a ruined castle is unclear. (Still, the ruined castle Harrenhall still grants lordship status and land rights to its owner) At any rate, as the last living Targaryen, Daenerys inherits all three of these holdings. (Summerhall is somewhat forgotten so I didn’t add it to the full title.) If she’s already a Queen, she’s not the Princess of Dragonstone, so in this regard, she just retains the lordship status the holding grants.
the Queen of Meereen,
Pretty straightforward, she’s the sovereign ruler of the city-state Meereen through right of conquest. Alternatively, she might even be called Queen of Dragon’s Bay too.
Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea,
This is somewhat more flexible and rudimentary but Khal is the closest equivalent of ruler in Dothraki tradition and Khaleesi does retain some of the same aspects as Princess/Queen. At any rate, de facto she now has the loyalty of multiple khalassars, so at present, this title would make her something like a ruler of a unified Dothraki people.
the Unburnt, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons.
These honors are de jure empty titles, they showcase her past achievements but bear no legal significance. They are honorifics similar to Brandon the Builder or Lann the Clever.
Depending on Daenerys’ perspective of her prophesized chosen one status that apparently the church of the Lord of Light recognizes at this point, she may, based on said canonization, start using the titles Lord’s Chosen or Princess Who Was Promised or something along these lines. This would serve as something like a legitimization but in Westeros, it would very likely prove to be counter-productive. In the Seven Kingdoms, it would be best to be annointed by the High Septon. If there was any.
Depending on the status of the North and the possible settling of Wildlings there during or after the Great War, the royal title might be updated to be Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar, the First Men and the Free Folk. However, the Free Folk are ethnically First Men so this might not be necessary.
If we count the ruined Summerhall as a separate legal holding then Daenerys is also Lady of Summerhall.
Feel free to tell me if you think I missed or misintrepreted something.
Thanks Kelly Russo for pointing out that I forgot the honorific “the Unburnt,”
Philip Sutter for pointing out that she’s not in fact Princess of Dragonstone. My bad! I mixed up the royal heir Prince of Dragonstone title with the actual ruling Prince rank (that is still in use in Dorne.) David Penrice pointed out that the Free Folk are in fact ethnically First Men, so including them separately in the royal title is illogical.
Benjamin Garrett provided an interesting argument that she should also be called Queen of Dragon’s Bay.
She is Daenerys Stormborn of House Targaryen, First of her name, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First men, Protector of the Realm, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Unburnt, Mother of Dragons, Breaker of Chains, Queen of Mereen.
If I remember the scene from when she and Jon meet, it’s: you stand before Daenerys Stormborn, rightful heir to the Seven Kingdoms, rightful ruler of the Andals and the First Men, Khaleesi of the great grass sea, the mother of dragons, the unburnt, the breaker of chains.
I could have left some out or gotten the wording wrong, but I didn’t want to cheat and Google it and was trying to go by just memory. It’s a mouthful to be sure.
Daenarys Targaryen Queen of the most useless parts of Westeros
Thats how it stands at end of season 7 as she no longer has Mereen and she certainty has no right to call herself Queen of all of Westeros. When I say the most useless parts I’m including the North, which will soon be overrun with wights and Dragonstone which is self explanatory useless. I don’t know if she controls Dorne and the Reach but if so they have been eliminated and are beyond useless
