Rituximab is used to treat certain types of cancer (e.g. non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia). It works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells. Some brands of rituximab are also used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and can help relieve joint pain and swelling.

Rituximab is one of those drugs that block the functioning of immune cells. This then reduces the high level of inflammation in the joints of RA patients. This long-term treatment can weaken the patient’s immune response and lead to so-called hypogammaglobulinemia.
The 68% ORR included 28% of patients in complete remission. At three years, event-free survival and overall survival were 28% and 38%, respectively. Few studies have examined the addition of rituximab to autologous transplantation after high-dose chemotherapy in patients with relapsed LDGCB.
Cytoxane and many cytotoxic chemotherapy drugs work by killing cells that are multiplying rapidly. It affects the cells of the intestine and hair follicles that multiply rapidly and in some people can cause hair loss and nausea. Rituximab doesn’t work that way, so it shouldn’t cause hair loss or nausea.
The infusions will then be repeated when the improvement has subsided or to prevent the arthritis from re-igniting. It can range from six months to a few years later. Due to the length of treatment, many people need to receive rituximab infusions at least once a year.
