The book states that materials that trap air, such as polystyrene and wool, are good insulators. Metals such as aluminum conduct heat well. A thermos is useful for keeping things cool as it reduces the passage of heat in all directions.
There are a number of materials that can be used as hot water insulators, each with their own application.
- Glass fiber. Fiberglass is made up of sections of glass that are woven together to form a type of fabric.
- Foam insulation.
- Other materials.
Cover the ice with foil, wrap an ice cube tray in foil. Reflective surfaces maintain an even temperature, so ice melts slower than ice exposed or covered with a non-reflective material such as paper towels.
Most thermal insulators work with stabilization and air insulation. Therefore, the cotton balls prevent air circulation and thus insulate. Cotton itself is just fiber and a small part of the total volume. Air has thermal conductivity.
