In anime and manga, hierarchical relationships are a reflection of modern Japanese society. One example of such a relationship is the one between a sempai and a kohai. Senpai can sometimes be spelled Sempai. The most common spelling of the word is senpai–senpai. This is due to a mispronunciation resulting from the interaction of the n consonant and the following p consonant. This causes the n sound to shift in anticipation of the p sound. Sempai is easier to pronounce (although technically it is incorrect, as there isn’t a standalone sound in the Japanese alphabet). You can say senpai and sempai.
