Swim approximately 2 miles from Alcatraz Island at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. This dive is intended for relatively strong swimmers. You should be able to cover this distance in a pool (140 lengths in a 25-meter pool) or under our regular open water group swim in Berkeley without stopping.
We were part of a group of 10 swimmers braving the stormy waters and strong currents of the San Francisco Bay on a 1.5 mile long pool from the infamous Alcatraz Island to the mainland. We turned and started swimming.
This meant that any escape would require a plane, a boat, or a long and difficult dive. The water can often drop as low as 16 degrees C (60 degrees F) and the currents will drive you crazy, which means you’ll have a hard ride.
