A beam spacing of 16-20 inches is common. The most important distance rule is to keep the distance between all barriers constant. First, assemble the front and rear beams and attach them to the front of the support posts above the joist.
The standard dimensions for the distance between the pergola beams are 12 “and 16” decentralized beam burners. This is a measurement of the center line from the center of the board, approximately three-quarters of an inch from the side of the board to its narrowest side.
Self-supporting pergolas have at least four uprights and, as the name suggests, stand upright without being attached to any other structure or wall. The advantage of free-standing pergolas is that there are no restrictions on overall size, height or orientation. However, there are always limits to the width of the bars.
For trusses and battens, we initially recommend 18 centers. (Note: the small pergola trusses are 1 3/4 x 3 3/4, but the small and extra heavy wood pergolas use the same 1 3/4 x 5 3/4 beams as the large pergolas.
For better shade coverage for most of the day with an open pergola, place it with the beams facing north and south. As the sun moves, the farms cast large shadows under the structure, except around noon when the sun is directly above them.

A pergola is an open hanging garden awning supported by pillars or posts. Pergolas are not designed to completely shield the sun, but to provide direct sunlight allowing air to circulate freely.
- Pergolas provide shade. Although they may appear unfinished to the untrained eye, pergolas provide shade. The size of the beams and their spacing determine exactly how much shade is provided, although a pergola itself can never create a fully shaded space.
22 feet for one span will not work (for 2 x 6 beams). You need at least three support positions, four would be even better. If you really want the longest full length pergola beam, you can look into the reinforced beams and vinyl pergolas to see if it’s doable.
They own a whopping 250 pounds.
According to the new voltage tables and IRC regulations, the overhangs can extend up to a quarter of the rear of the carrier. This means that beams like South Pine 2x10 to 16 ‘’ in the middle that extend for 12 feet can protrude another 3 feet (see image below).
