Definition of Parity bit:

  1. Binary digit (0 or 1) added to a group of bits to make its sum odd or even, for checking its integrity during transmission or storage. Se also parity.

  2. A bit which acts as a check on a set of binary values, calculated in such a way that the number of 1s in the set plus the parity bit should always be even (or occasionally, should always be odd).
