  1. A substance that tends to bring about oxidation by being reduced and gaining electrons.

  2. Substance that tends to give-off oxygen when the ambient temperature rises over a certain point and, thus, may cause ignition of sensitive organic material. This term includes oxidizers such as chlorates, perchlorates, peroxides, etc., that react spontaneously and vigorously on contact with some metals and other materials. Also called oxidant.
