If you have spots or runs after eating a bowl of oatmeal, you may be allergic or sensitive to an oat protein. However, oats do not contain gluten; it is often grown and processed in plants that also process wheat, rye and other gluten-containing substances.
Oats contain a protein called avenin, which can cause an allergic reaction in some people. A person who has eaten oatmeal can sometimes feel uncomfortable and have symptoms of an oat allergy. However, you may have gluten intolerance.
