Gartner defines mobile payments as transactions involving a mobile phone and payment instruments, including:

  • Banking instruments such as cash, bank account or debit/credit card and
  • Stored Value Accounts (SVA), such as a transit card, gift card, Paypal or mobile wallet

And exclude transactions that use:

  • Billing from a mobile operator through a telecommunications billing system without integration with the bank's payment infrastructure, or
  • Telebanking with a mobile phone to call a service center through an interactive voice response system (IVR). However, IVR used in conjunction with other mobile channels, such as Short Message Service (SMS) or Structured Unstructured Data (USSD), is included.
