How to Resize Images on Mac
In this guide, we will take a panoramic image from the Grand Canyon and scale it from a very wide resolution to smaller resolution, reducing image size and file size in the process.
Find the image on the Mac file system that you want to resize.
Open the image file you want to resize into Preview on the Mac. Because Preview is typical of the default image viewer, you can double-click the image in Finder to open it.
Pull down the “Tools” menu and select “Adjust Size”.
On the ‘Image size’ screen, select a new width and height in pixels (or inches, cm, mm, dots, in percent) to resize the image. To scale and scale proportionally, make sure to choose an option “Proportionate” - Click on “OK” when satisfied with the new image size to resize.
The image in Preview will be scaled down to the resolution size selected in the previous step. If not, repeat the above steps to resize the image again or move on to the next step.
When satisfied with the resized image, go to the “File” menu and select “Save” to save the resized image to an existing file, or select “Save As” to save the resized image as a new image file.
Suppose you chose “Save As”, choose a new file name, choose a file destination, choose an appropriate file format and choose Adjust Image Quality, then click on “Save” to save the resized image.
The newly resized image will be where you saved it in the Mac Finder, or it will be the old one if you saved it over an existing image.
Remember, you can increase image resolution or decrease image resolution by resizing this way. If you increase the image size, the file size will increase, while if you reduce the image size, the file size often decreases.
Note that the “Fit into” option will cause a large amount of the new default file size. Instead, we chose to use a custom image dimension to resize the image to be here. Likewise, you don’t have to use options. However, as most users do not want to skew the scaled image of the image, we recommend using proportional scaling.
