Select the parts you want to join. It is usually easier to connect the smaller of the two to the larger one. The larger pieces with the surface must first be heated in order to obtain an easily workable surface. Then run the glue under the flame on the smaller piece until it is clear.
Lighter materials are often non-metallic and, when used in sheet metal, are too thin to be welded effectively. Welding of different materials is difficult because the finished joint is not homogeneous and can weaken the finished assembly.

Using the soldering iron to weld plastic isn’t limited to repairs - you can weld plastic for manufacturing and even artistic purposes.
