The bow tie can dress up any dog for a night on the town.
If you have a formal event coming up and you want to bring his furry friend, dress him up with a bow tie to fit him in just a few minutes and you can show him how to tie a tie for a dog. As elegant or as fun as you want.
Measure around your dog’s neck and tap the elastic an inch or shorter so that the elastic is slightly stretched to go around. Make sure you can easily hold your finger when on him, so you know. He has breathing space.
Choose the right ribbon for the occasion. Try a solid black or white color for a formal look, or try a solid color, stripes, or other fun print. The width of the ribbon should be appropriate for the size of your dog, typically anywhere from an inch wide for small males up to 3 inches for large dogs.
Cut the ribbon to add to your desired length. If your dog is large, his ready-made bow tie should be 8 inches wide, so you’ll need to cut out 16 inches of ribbon. If your friend is smaller, the 3-inch tie is usually pretty good, so cut a 6-inch section. Finger out.
Fold the cut ribbon in half so that the ends meet and find the middle. Make a small dot or marker with a pencil or fabric marker in the center of the back, then stretch the ribbon flat on your table face down.
Draw a bead of hot glue in the middle of the fabric from top to bottom. As soon as you make the strands, press both ends of the ribbon into the hot glue.
Cut one more of the same ribbon, this one, about 2 inches or longer. May be slightly shorter if the ribbon is narrow.
Fold the short ribbon into thirds, with the folding going a long way. Sections should overlap underneath so that they cannot be seen from above. Iron the cloth as much so as not to fall off.
Grab a large piece of ribbon in the center and squeeze it along the fashion accordion in the seam. Wrap a narrow strip around the compressed center section and use hot glue on the back to hold it together and tie the bow neatly.
Attach the elastic to the back of the bow tie by sewing the ends together at the center. Move your friend’s head and he is ready to go out into town.
