## How Much Is A 1923 Silver Dollar Worth?

After World War I ended, the United States issued silver peace dollars as a symbol of peace. It was used from 1921 until 1935 and briefly in 1965 when it had the word “Peace” engraved underneath the bird on the reverse.

The U. S. Mint created these Peace Dollars, which are 90% silver and 10% copper, as the last silver coins in circulation. There are 24 coins in a set of Peace Dollars, some of which are quite hard to locate in mint condition.

**1. Dollars of the Peace of 1921**

The Peace Dollar was first struck in late 1921 and entered circulation in January 1922. It was the second silver dollar manufactured in 1921, the first being the Peace Dollar. More 1921 Morgan gold dollars than any previous Morgan Dollars were produced that year, totalling over 85 million.

Since only 1,006,473 of these Peace Dollars were produced in 1921, the year is very significant for those who collect the coin. An uncirculated 1921 War Dollar was worth $265 in 2010, according to the Professional Gold Grading Service (PCGS).

**2. Peace Dollars of 1928**

Since just 360,649 Peace Dollars were printed in 1928, this is the most scarce of all the Peace Dollars. A significantly more frequent currency is the 1928-S Peace Dollar, of which the San Francisco Mint struck over 1.6 million coins.

**3. Peace Dollars of 1964-D**

As only 300,000 1964-D Peace Dollars were minted by the Denver Mint in 1965, they are the most sought-after. But because silver prices were going up so fast, the government ordered that all 1964-D Peace Dollars be melted down.

According to The Mystical 1964 Peace Dollar website, there is no record of any coins still being in circulation. Existing coins are considered stolen government property and hence illegal to possess.

**4. Non-Key Dates**

Semi-key dates are those in which coins are manufactured in a smaller number than other coins of a similar variety, but they aren’t the most scarce. Peace Dollars were struck between 1924 and 1935, and the semi-key date and times in the series are 1924-1925; 1925-1925; 1927; 1927-D; and 1928-1928.

Their rarity makes them more expensive than the most commonly produced peace dollars. Many Peace Dollars with semi-key dates have values 10 to 50% more than regular Peace Dollars.
