The origin of feet
In 1066 Belgic and Roman used feet in their measurement. Before that Celt was a unit about 9 inches used in pre-Roman era. A unification was brought by Edward I in 1308 when he declared an inch to be equal to three round and dry barley grains. Well the length is determined to be slightly less than the present barley maybe the difference occurred due to use of fertilizer which has made barley today richer.
The foot present today is Greco-Roman which has its roots on Egypt. The inch measure was anthropomorphic declared as ¾ inch of finger width. The length of forearm was 18 inches which was divided into 2 feet of 12 digits, in Greece it was Pythic foot. Later Romans adopted it to form the Attic foot who increased it by 4 digits and divided it into 12 inches or unica.
For general use a foot comprises of 12 inches. An inch has further many divisions in different forms to serve the purpose of engineering drawings and their tools. A foot was commonly used across the Europe for measurement but its length was carrying all across the countries even differed among the cities as well. It was attributed to Henry I of England that the standard for a foot should be the size of a person’s own foot. This was reported as the first time a standard measurement was established.
It all became official when in 1959 different states came together for establishing one standardized measure of length in a treaty called ‘International Yard and Pound Agreement’. These countries were United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Canada and United States. This was the standardization of avoirdupois lights and weight for all countries.
Mostly in United Kingdom and United States the road signs are in feet and inches. Also. The height of people is also measured in feet and inches. Still many people use feet and inches for measuring Altitude.
Feet or foot is commonly used for linear measurements and it is based on light of the human foot which would be 25-34 cm. A foot consists of 1/3rd of a yard or 12 inches. In United States it is 30.48 cm. Although the System International SI has metre as the standard for length but still many countries still use foot for making linear measurements. It can be attributed to the fact that sometimes people are more inclined towards the convenience of usage then following the actual rule. This is why many measurement still differ across the world.
