Living in the scrub, grassland, and open woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa. Lion the second largest cat in the world.
The African lion also is known as Panthera leo has represented strength and courage throughout history. The cat is easily identified by the male’s mane and both it’s a roar. Lions are the most social cats and live in groups called pride. The volume of a pride depends on food availability, but a classic group includes a dozen females, three lions, and their cubs.
Normally, the size of an African lion is 4 to 7 feet by their body and 26 to 40 inches by their tail. The weight of the African lion is usually 265 to 430 pounds. And they last for 10 to 14 years. Lions are carnivores. African lion habitat is sub-Sahara Africa. Three are more than 20,000 lions in sub-Sahara Africa.
When lion cubs are born they have dark spots on their coat, which fades by time. But belly spots remain in adulthood also.
Hunting
Females and males take on very different acts of pride. Male lions spend their time defending their cubs and territory. They protect a boundary of their territory by urine, by roaring, chasing off intruders.
Female lions are the dominant hunters of the group. They are more agile and smaller than males. Their pray is generally faster than them, and they do teamwork to do a hunt.
They form a semicircle, fanning out, weaker lionesses round up toward the center. Then the stronger female kills the animal by knocking it down.
Lions normally used to do their hunt at night. Their prey includes zebras, buffaloes, rhinos, buffaloes, wild hogs, a young elephant, giraffe, and crocodile.
But lions also used to do a smaller hunt sometimes, when they can’t do a big hunt like birds, lizards, mice, tortoise, and hares. Lions did not steal the kill from other carnivores like wild dogs, leopards, hyenas, and cheetahs.
Feasting
All the lion eat the meal together after a successful hunt. Adult males call for the first take, chase by the lionesses, and then the cubs.
Lions have a good digestive system, which allows them to fill themselves and then they go for the other shortly. They drink water daily, if available. They can go four to five days without drinking any water.
Sleep

They spend sixteen to twenty hours of their day resting or sleeping, in big cats lion is the laziest. They can be found resting or sleeping by taking a snooze up in a tree or lying on the back with their feet up. While relaxing around, they are very caring, friendly, and loving toward one another, grooming, rubbing heads, and purring.
The birth stage

Lioness can give birth to two to three cubs at a time. Commonly a couple of females give birth over the same time. The cubs are then nursing communally sometimes, and raised together.
Defenseless to predators like blackjacked jackals, hyenas, tiger, and leopards, cubs have a sixty to seventy percent fatality rate. They are sometimes run over and hurt by large animals like giraffe, buffaloes, and elephants. A male lion kills all the cubs when taking over pride to sire their own with the lionesses.
Female cubs stay with the group as they age. They able to do hunting at around the age of two years old. In normal, a group of males remains in power for around three years in the pride before another single group takes it their pride.
Preserver status
The African lion is going to the way of extinction day by day by the IUCN red list. They are threatened by fragmentation of habitat and by loss. They are also killed by humans for medicinal powers, in bravery rituals, ranchers protecting their livestock and for hunting trophies and other medals as well. Moreover, they get dangerous diseases like babesia and canine distemper. The combination of babesia and distemper causes mass fatalities in lion populations.
Different types of lions
Listed below is a study of some of the lion community living in the world.
- Barbary lion (Leo)
The Barbary lion is also called the North African lion. The subspecies of this lion has recently occurred in morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt. Right now it is extinct in the wild due to extensive and indiscriminate hunting. A Barbary lion was killed in 1920, it is killed in morocco, and it is the last known wild Barbary lion.
The Barbary lion is one of the largest subspecies of lion. It’s length ranging begin from nine feet to eleven feet. Normally the weight of a Barbary lion is over two hundred kg.
- West African lion (Leo)
The West African lion is the least among the sub-Saharan African lion. Only about eighteen thousand entities remain as fragmented and small populations in west Africa.
- Southwest African lion (melanochaita)
The southwest African lion or Katanga lion is found in southwestern Africa in the countries of Zaire, Angola, Zimbabwe, and western Zambia, northern Botswana, and Namibia. Southwest African lions are one of the biggest over all kinds of lions. The length of the southwest African male lion is between eight to ten
feet normally, while females have a length between seven to nine feet.
- Masai lion (melanochaita)
The Masai lion or the east African lion is normally found in east Africa in the countries of Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique, and Tanzania. The Masai or east African lions have fewer rounded backs and longer legs than other kinds of lions. Gente tufts of hair can be found in the knee joints of males.
The manes who are living in low land areas are weaker than the manes who are living in highlands above 2,600 feet areas. Lionesses are smaller than the male Masai lions, lionesses attain a length between seven to 9 feet, and male lions attain a length between eight to ten feet.
5. Transvaal lion (melanochaita)
The Transvaal lion (south African lion) also known as Kalahari lion is found in the southern parts of Africa with a compelling population in south Africa Swaziland and Kruger national park Hlane’s Royal National park.
Most of the males of Kalahari lions subspecies have a well developed black mane. Females attain a length between seven to nine feet, while male attains a length between eight to eleven feet. Females are about one hundred ten to ninety kg in weight, while male Kalahari lions weigh about one hundred fifty to two hundred fifty kg.
6. Ethiopian lion (melanochaita)
The Ethiopian lion ( Panthera leo Roosevelt) or the Addis Ababa lion or the Abyssinian is a type of lion that is yet thought to be the East African lion was known as a separate subspecies after genotypic and phenotypic analysis in the Addis Ababa’s zoo on lion kept captivity. Ethiopian lions have smaller bodies and darker manes as related to the other lion subspecies.
7. Asiatic lion (Leo)
The Indian lion ( Panthera leo Persica) or Asiatic lion in founding widespread across turkey to the Indian subcontinent, is confined currently restricted to the areas of the wildlife sanctuary and Gir national park in the Indian state of Gujrat. Only around five hundred and twenty-three Asiatic lion remain in this forest.
The Asiatic lion or Indian lion is similar in size to the central African lion but it is smaller than the largest of the African lion.
The weight of female Asiatic lions ranges from one hundred ten to one hundred and twenty, while male manes range from one hundred sixty to one ninety kg.
The fur color of the Indian lion ranges from buffish grey, sandy, or ruddy Twan covered with a large number of patches of black. Their ears are always visible and they have a moderate mane growth as contrary to African subspecies. The genetic variation of the Asiatic lion is fewer than the African subspecies also. Asiatic lions are also restricted as endangered by the IUCN.
Endangered Lions
All of the lions discussed above are unprotected to variable extents. Hunting is one of the biggest causes, especially unregulated trophy hunters are found guilty for the decline of the African subspecies of lion. In trophy hunting, the head of the lions is offered as a trophy to the hunters and therefore the main male called the dominant male is generally targeted since it is the most valuable and largest trophy to the hunters. The death of male mane trouble and disturb the formation of the pride .due to this fact lion cubs are also lost and this is the main reason for population decline. There is a higher need to build awareness about the need to save the lions around the public of the countries inhabited by the lions to save this diamond species.
