Why is ch2ch2oh (ethylene glycol) polar?

You have to imagine molecules in three dimensions. Each carbon atom geometry has a tetrahedron and each has an OH residue on the outside. Oxygen is much more electric than carbon, so every CO bond is polar which leads to oxygen. Normally, they would both cancel each other out if the two dopoles were pointing in opposite directions, but ethylene glycol has other properties that prevent it from happening. One OH group has an internal hydrogen bond between hydrogen and the other OH group has an oxygen atom. This causes the dopole to stay on the same side of the molecule and polarize the molecule.
