OBDII PIDs (On-Board Diagnostic Parameter IDs) are codes used to request data from a vehicle used as a diagnostic tool. Light vehicles (under 3,900 kg) were first mandatory in 1996, followed by medium vehicles (between 8,500 and 14,000 pounds [3,900-6,400 kg]) in 2005.
DTC trouble codes are stored in the PMC’s memory when it later identifies a problem. In OBD II systems, they are displayed as five-digit alphanumeric code numbers.
Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (PDTCs) are very similar to General Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). However, unlike standard DTCs, they cannot be reset by disconnecting or clearing the vehicle’s battery using an on-board diagnostic (OBD) scan tool.

There is really no way of knowing if the codes have been removed. If you are lucky enough to have a good scanner (Modis, Autel, etc.) you may be able to find some history codes. If you wish to purchase a vehicle, you can ask the seller to test the vehicle for you.

They all start a very clear code that won’t be disabled until the problem is fixed. If the condition that caused it is a minor bug and it doesn’t recur, it will resolve itself. If the condition indicates a serious problem, it will persist until it is manually removed.
Open codes are the result of intermittent errors or errors that the PCM must see during two consecutive warm-up cycles to set the code. If the error does not recur within 40 warm-up cycles, the code will be cleared from memory.
A permanent diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is logged when a DTC is confirmed and the functional indicator light (MIL) turns on. A permanent DTC can only be removed from a module policy and not by removing the DTCs with a scan tool, KeepAlive Memory Reset (KAM), or battery connection.
This means that all DTCs are removed and only permanent DTCs remain. With the ignition key inserted, start the car and let it idle for at least 30 seconds. Then, without turning the key, drive the car at 40 mph or more for at least 5 minutes.
