  1. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) uses core based statistical area (CBSA) to uniformly define different population and geographic descriptions. Introduced in 2000, the definition for a CBSA is a functional region with at least 10,000 people. A micropolitan statistical area has 10,000 to 49,999 people along with a principle city, and a metropolitan area has 50,000 or more people.
