Collective Investment Funds (cifs),
How Do You Define Collective Investment Funds (cifs)?
A Collective Investment Fund (CIF) is a trust established and managed by a bank or trust company that caters to the assets of different clients. Federal securities regulations generally require companies that collect securities to register these deposited vehicles (such as mutual funds) with the SEC. However, Congress has exempted the registration requirements of these CIFs, provided that the funding company is a bank or other authorized company and participation in the fund is limited to the customers to whom the exemption applies. When these restrictions are enforced, the CIF is exempt from the SEC's registration and reporting requirements. See related questions about mutual funds.
