## When should a piercing be removed?

The best course of action is to leave the earring in place if an infected fresh piercing. If the piercing is removed, the wound will be able to seal and contain the infection. As a result, unless instructed otherwise by a physician or a licensed piercer, it is best to leave an earring in an infected ear.

A person can safely remove an earring once the wound has healed, which normally takes 2 to 3 months for earlobe piercings and longer for cartilage piercings.
