Definition of Cholera:

  1. Bacterial infection of the small intestine, it is transmitted by contaminated food and water, and characterized by symptoms such as profuse diarrhea, vomiting, muscular cramps, and severe dehydration and loss of electrolyte. It is caused by the pathogen vibrio cholerae (comma shaped bacillus) found commonly in the poorer regions of Africa, Central and South America, Indian subcontinent and other parts of Southeast Asia.

  1. During the mission trip down in Costa Rica, one of the volunteers happened to contract cholera , and had diarrhea for a whole week.
  2. When traveling through the villages of South America, the research group took a lot of food and water to avoid ingesting any food contaminated with cholera , and watched for diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration that are signs of the illness.
