  1. A map on which statistical information is shown in diagrammatic form.

  2. A diagram in which the information is shown in a geographical distribution of a map. The map is abstracted in order to translate the information of the alternative variable. An example is one which the Gross National Product is shown as a substitute for land area or distance.
