The carbon atom is filled with a positive hydrogen atom and the other carbons in the chain have a negative hydroxyl group. When one end of a carbon chain is positive and the other is negative, or when the charge is disproportionately distributed, the molecule is polar.

Any formula where there is only OH at one end is alcohol. Alcohol is soluble in water.

The easiest way to check if a single pole is there is to ask if it dissolves in water or oil. In general, polar substances are soluble in water and non-polar substances are soluble in oil. (Some similar detergents dissolve in both, but I'm not sure if they're polarized).
