Definition of Arbiter:

  1. A person who settles a dispute or has ultimate authority in a matter.

  2. Independent counsel appointed on court order to settle a dispute. Unlike an arbitrator, an arbiter must get his or her decision confirmed by the appointing court. See also arbitration.
