Definition of Adversary system:

  1. = Conflicting system.

  2. Litigation in the UK legal system (in the UK, in the United States and United States of America, with the exception of the US state of Louisiana and the Canadian province of Quebec). In this system, an issue is debated by two opposing parties who have the primary responsibility of discovering and presenting the facts. The prosecutor tried to prove that the defendants were guilty and the defendant's lawyer asked for the defendants to be released. The case is then decided by a judge (or jury) who does not investigate the facts, but acts as an arbitrator. It is also known as the controversial process. See also query system.
